Thirdly, I read The Mothers by Brit Bennett. A great short story recommendation if you’re looking for something spooky in the run-up to Halloween. I absolutely fell in love with this collection and it very strongly reminded me of The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. My second read of September was Famished by Anna Vaught which was a cracking little short story collection kindly gifted to me by the lovely people at Influx Press. I was, however, VERY happy to see Hamnet win the prize as it still remains one of my favourite books I’ve read all year. A bit of a slow-burn at times but a novel I felt was deserving of its place on the shortlist. I kick-started the month with Dominicana ahead of the Women’s Prize for Fiction winner announcement on the 9th September. I managed to read seven books this month which sounds like a lot, but the majority of books I read this month were very short (less than 200 pages) so I flew through them in just one or two sittings. I tend to lean towards fiction more often than non-fiction anyway, but during this crazy year, I’ve pretty much read solely fiction as I find it the best genre to give me that escapism I’ve been craving. When I’m stressed or anxious, I like to pick up a book as a way of escaping reality. September was a turbulent month in lots of ways, between starting my new job and Covid restrictions being increased, there’s been a lot going on.
